Today, we have access to a wide variety of animals, a Colombian-species aquarium, a butterfly house, reptiles, hippos, and elephants. There is a bullring there as well, which is now a museum. Once, Pablo Escobar purchased numerous animals from a zoo in Dallas for about $2 million USD and illegally transported them by sea to Colombia.
Pablo Escobar loved the American mobster Al Capone, whose father was born in Naples, Italy, and whose name inspired the naming of the Hacienda.
The Hacienda was abandoned after the boss was killed for more than 15 years, resulting in the destruction of a sizable opulent residence, six swimming pools, 27 man-made lakes, a landing strip, and multiple heliports. Many lions, Bengal tigers, and jaguars were also present.
Since Napoles originally housed over 1,900 creatures, including Australian kangaroos, giraffes, and exotic birds, the species that call it home at the moment is only a modest exhibit.
One of the many legends is that Escobar bought some donkeys and painted them with black stripes to try to trick the police when Colombian officials sought to confiscate some zebras that were on the Hacienda.
Escobar sent four hippos to Napoles, where they survived the abandonment and grew to be the species’ biggest population outside of Africa. A white rhinoceros named “Vera” was moved to Hacienda Napoles after spending more than 20 years in an urban zoo and became the fourth of her kind there, but sadly, she passed away in December 2018.
